What each one gets wrong for some visitors: Toledo means a climb from the station, about 20 minutes on foot, and the cathedral only admits visitors who are modestly dressed. Segovia is thin on paintings, and a weekend train lands you at the aqueduct at 11.05am, right as the Alcázar’s busiest window of 11am to 1.30pm begins.

The Alcázar of Segovia tips it for most families. Children under 8 go free at the cathedral, the Alcázar palace and artillery museum have ramps, and the Juan II tower, 152 steps on a spiral staircase, is a reward for older kids.
The tower is not step-free, and tickets that include it sell out at weekends, so buy before leaving Madrid. Toledo charges €6 for ages 8 to 14 at the cathedral, and the walk up from the station is 1.3 km uphill; the city buses 5, 511, 61 and 62 do it for €1.40, cash only.
How do you get there from the airport or central Madrid?
