Can you see the lights after dinner

A plan that works on a weeknight:
- Dinner at 9pm, booked if it is a Friday or Saturday.
- Start at Banco de España by 11pm. Weekday lights go off at midnight.
- Finish at Plaza Mayor or Ópera and take Line 2 back before the Metro closes.
Should you walk or take the Naviluz lights bus
Walk, unless you want the Salamanca district. The Naviluz, run by ALSA, covers Serrano and Goya in about 50 minutes but skips Sol, Calle del Carmen and Plaza Mayor, and it drops Gran Vía in bad weather.
In 2025-26 an adult ticket was €12 to €15, or €9 from the 9pm departure. Tickets are sold online only, with no changes, every seat is on the open top deck, and rain does not earn a refund, according to ALSA. Wheelchair users travel downstairs with a partial view. Which nights should you avoid
- Switch-on Saturday. In 2025 it was 22 November at 7.30pm in Plaza de Cibeles, and Sol metro and Cercanías closed from 7pm to 9pm while Sevilla and Banco de España closed from 6pm to 9.30pm, according to Madrid City Council. Pick any other evening.
- New Year’s Eve. The lights stay on until 6am, but access to Sol is limited to four streets, as covered in New Year’s Eve at Puerta del Sol.
- Crowded evenings on Preciados. On busy nights the council can make Preciados and Carmen one-way for pedestrians: Preciados entered only from Sol, Carmen only from Callao. That is why the route goes down Carmen.
Is it safe in the crowds
Yes, with the usual big-city care. The tight spots are Carmen, Preciados and Sol, where pickpockets work any dense crowd, so carry little, keep your phone in a front pocket and leave the passport at the hotel.
