Where to Have Dinner in Madrid and at What Time

Botín serves straight through from 13:00 to 23:30 and the Mercado de San Miguel runs to midnight, while the Taberna La Bola shuts at 20:30 even on its longest day. The terrace and the dining room of the same restaurant close two hours apart in winter, because a different administration sets each clock.

A visitor who walks into central Madrid at six in the evening looking for dinner will find the dining rooms empty and the kitchens cold. Dinner here is eaten between 21:00 and 22:30, and most kitchens do not open for it until 20:00 at the earliest. The problem is not that Madrid closes early. It is that Madrid starts late, and two of the four classic houses have shut for the day by the time the city sits down.

What time can you have dinner in Madrid? Dinner runs from about 21:00 to 22:30, and few kitchens serve before 20:00. Botín is the exception, open straight through 13:00 to 23:30. The Mercado de San Miguel runs to 24:00, and the Taberna La Bola closes at 20:30 even on its longest day.

Dinner in Madrid is a question of which kitchen is still open rather than of choice. Every house named below sits inside metro zone A, where a single fare runs €1.50 to €2.00 and a 10-trip Metrobús at €7.30 brings each journey down to €0.73, which is the ticket that suits a short stay. What varies is the clock, and three separate clocks apply inside the same building: the kitchen’s, which no rule governs, the terrace’s, set by the Ayuntamiento de Madrid, and the room’s, set by the regional government.

Where to eat dinner in Madrid before 8pm

Early dinner in Madrid has two answers rather than none, and both are in the same few streets of the centre.

Botín serves 13:00 to 23:30, seven days a week, without the mid-afternoon break that closes almost every other dining room in the city. That continuous kitchen is what makes it the reliable early option, not its fame. It stands at Calle de Cuchilleros 17 and has been running since 1725, and according to Guinness World Records it is the oldest restaurant in the world still trading.

The Mercado de San Miguel opens at 10:00 and keeps going until 24:00 from Sunday to Thursday, reaching 01:00 on Fridays, Saturdays and the eve of a public holiday. It is a privately run food hall rather than one of the city’s grocery markets, which is why its hours look nothing like theirs, as set out in Madrid’s municipal markets.

  1. Before 20:00 — Botín’s continuous kitchen, or the counters at San Miguel.
  2. From 20:00 to 21:00 — most dining rooms have opened but are close to empty.
  3. From 21:00 to 22:30 — the hour Madrid actually eats, and the hour to book.
  4. After 23:30 — San Miguel until midnight, then the churros counter.

Can you have cocido madrileño for dinner

Cocido is a lunch in Madrid, and the reason is published rather than cultural. According to the house itself the Taberna La Bola has cooked the dish in individual clay pots over holm-oak charcoal since 1870, and the Taberna opens Sunday to Wednesday from 13:00 to 16:00 and Thursday to Saturday from 12:00 to 20:30.

Even on its longest day the door shuts at 8.30pm, half an hour before Madrid begins to eat dinner. A traveller set on the Taberna has to spend a lunch on it, though Malacatín does serve the dish at dinner from Wednesday to Saturday, compared in where to eat cocido madrileño. Its set menus run from €39.90 for the house menu to €47 for the sharing one, with an anniversary menu at €45, eight in total. Why the terrace closes before the dining room

An outdoor table and an indoor table in the same Madrid restaurant do not close at the same time, because different administrations set them.

The terrace answers to Ordenanza 7/2025 of the Ayuntamiento de Madrid, which shuts it at 00:00 from 1 November to 14 March and allows 1:00 Sunday to Thursday or 1:30 on Fridays, Saturdays and the eve of a holiday for the rest of the year, covered in Madrid terrace closing times. The room inside answers to a regional order that permits service until 2:00, set out in when Madrid’s bars and clubs close.

In winter that is a two-hour gap inside one building. Booking a terrace for a Friday in November and arriving at 22:30 buys ninety minutes of table.

What is open to eat after two in the morning

Once the bars stop serving at 2am, the centre empties of food fast, and only on three nights of the week does anything stay open. The Chocolatería San Ginés runs into the small hours from Thursday to Saturday, and has done since 1894, according to the house itself.

That puts it on two different lists, breakfast and the end of a night out, but only at the weekend end of the week. There is more than one branch of the name, and its published prices cover only the original, set out in chocolate and churros in Madrid.

What dinner costs, and whether to tip

Set menus at the centenary houses start at €39.90 and Botín works from an à la carte menu with a habitual full house, so a weekend booking is not optional. San Miguel is the opposite: standing counters and a bill the diner builds stall by stall, though it does take bookings through its own website, covered in the Mercado de San Miguel.

On tipping, the habit to unlearn is the American one. Service is not added and VAT is already inside the listed price, so rounding up or leaving a euro or two per person is normal and nothing more is expected.

Two more habits travel badly. Lunch here runs from about 14:00 to 16:00, so a restaurant that looks shut at midday is often just not open yet, and the same building will be full two hours later. And tap water is drinkable across the city, so asking for agua del grifo is free and normal rather than awkward.

At the opposite end of the bill sits the starred tier, 31 restaurants in the 2026 edition with 1 at three stars and 24 at one, where booking runs weeks ahead rather than on the night.

Frequently asked questions about dinner in Madrid

What time do people eat dinner in Madrid?

Between 21:00 and 22:30 as a rule, which is two to three hours later than in Britain or the United States. Most kitchens do not open for dinner before 20:00, so arriving at 18:00 means finding tapas bars rather than a dining room.

Where can I eat dinner in Madrid at 7pm?

Botín, which serves straight through from 13:00 to 23:30 without shutting between lunch and dinner, and the Mercado de San Miguel, whose counters run from 10:00 to midnight. Both take the early diner that a conventional dining room will not.

Can I have cocido madrileño for dinner in Madrid?

At Malacatín yes, which serves dinner from Wednesday to Saturday. At the Taberna La Bola no, because its longest day ends at 8.30pm, before Madrid starts eating dinner, so that house’s cocido is a lunch.

Why does the terrace close before the dining room?

Two different administrations set them. The terrace answers to a Madrid city ordinance and closes at 00:00 from 1 November to 14 March, while the room inside answers to a regional order that allows service until 02:00.

Is anywhere in Madrid open to eat after 2am?

The Chocolatería San Ginés, which stays open into the small hours from Thursday to Saturday and has done since 1894. Earlier in the week it closes sooner, so a plan built on it for a Monday night is worth checking rather than assuming.

Do I need to tip after dinner in Madrid?

No. Service is not added to the bill and VAT is already inside the menu price, so tipping is optional and small. Rounding up or leaving a euro or two per person is normal, and nothing like the 20 per cent expected in the United States.

Four houses, four closing times and three separate clocks, and the earliest one shuts before the city has thought about dinner.
