Christmas Villages Near Madrid, Which to Visit

Want a Christmas outing beyond central Madrid? Pick the village by the day: the theme park in Torrejón shut early in the week in 2025, the monastery beside El Escorial's street nativity shuts on Mondays, and Buitrago's living nativity runs on just four evenings with tickets released on 1 November. All three are a train or bus ride away.

The main Christmas villages near Madrid are Torrejón de Ardoz, San Lorenzo de El Escorial and Buitrago del Lozoya, and none of them needs a car. Torrejón de Ardoz, about 20 km east of the centre, turns its fairground into Mágicas Navidades, a ticketed theme park open from 14 November to 10 January in 2026-27. San Lorenzo de El Escorial, 42 km north-west, spreads 600 life-size nativity figures over more than 6,000 m² of streets. Buitrago del Lozoya, 64 km north, stages a living nativity on four December evenings for €6. A Cercanías single ticket covers the first two; Buitrago is on the interurban bus network, which runs from Plaza de Castilla.

Which village near Madrid is best at Christmas? Torrejón de Ardoz for a ticketed Christmas theme park open until 10 January, San Lorenzo de El Escorial for a 600-figure street nativity beside the monastery, and Buitrago del Lozoya for a living nativity on 12, 13, 19 and 20 December 2026. Torrejón and El Escorial are on Cercanías trains; Buitrago is on bus 191.

2025-26 and 2026-27 seasons. The regional village programme is announced each December.

The day of the week decides more than the village. Monday rules out El Escorial’s monastery, which is shut, and in 2025 Torrejón’s park was shut from Monday to Wednesday outside the December long weekend and the school holidays. Thursday to Sunday works for both. Buitrago runs only on its four fixed dates, two weekends before Christmas.

What does Torrejón’s Christmas theme park include?

Mágicas Navidades fills Torrejón’s fairground from 4pm until 11pm or midnight, depending on the day. The 2026-27 season runs from 14 November to 10 January; the weekly calendar is published with the opening. The ticket is bought on the park’s website, and it covers the Christmas market, the light trails, the maze, the flying-sleigh show and the closing Rocking Christmas show at the Puerta Mágica. The big wheel, the ice rink, the ice-sculpture festival and the fairground rides cost extra, so budget for them if you have children.

Take Renfe Cercanías C2 or C7 to Torrejón de Ardoz station, about 700 metres in a straight line from the fairground. It suits an evening: in Spain dinner starts late, around 9pm, so you can be back in Madrid in time.

Is El Escorial’s street nativity worth the trip?

The Belén Monumental is walked rather than visited: 600 life-size figures through the streets and squares of the old town, and the Comunidad lists it as a regional tourist festival. Pair it with the Royal Monastery, shut on Mondays, with a general ticket of €14; times are in El Escorial tickets and last admission. Line C8 reaches El Escorial station, 1.5 km on foot from the monastery.

When is Buitrago’s living nativity?

Residents act out 41 scenes along 1,300 metres of the walled town at 6.30pm and 8.30pm on 12, 13, 19 and 20 December 2026. Tickets cost €6 and went on sale at midnight on 1 November; the details and how to get back are in the living nativity near Madrid. Bus 191 leaves from Plaza de Castilla.

The Comunidad de Madrid runs a Christmas programme for villages of fewer than 20,000 people.

In 2025 it listed more than 150 events until 10 January, mostly free: a natural ice rink in Cercedilla (until 10 January, on line C8), a Christmas village in Campo Real’s main square, children’s parks in Moralzarzal and Fuente el Saz de Jarama, and a torch-lit procession down from the woods in Robledo de Chavela on 20 December. The 2026 programme comes out in December.
