Which pretty village near Madrid should you pick for a day trip? Without a car, El Escorial by Cercanías or Chinchón by coach; with one, Sigüenza, whose cathedral costs €10, or Pedraza, whose castle opens Wednesday to Sunday. Thirteen villages within 2 h 15 min, sorted by how you travel and which day each sight opens. On a Monday, El Escorial's monastery is shut.

Five of the most beautiful villages near Madrid can be done without a car, and the other eight need one, at 50 minutes to 2 h 15 min each way. San Lorenzo de El Escorial is about 50 minutes on the Cercanías C-8, Sigüenza has regional trains from Chamartín that take 2 h 24 min or more, and city coaches go to Chinchón (line 337 from Pavones), Buitrago del Lozoya (191) and Rascafría (194). By car, the furthest village here, Valverde de los Arroyos, is 2 h 15 min from Puerta del Sol. The thing that catches visitors out is Monday, when El Escorial’s monastery and Buitrago’s Picasso museum are shut.

What is the most beautiful village near Madrid? If you do not have a car, Sigüenza: a cathedral with the Doncel tomb for €10, open every day, and regional trains from Chamartín. With a car, Pedraza, a walled village 1 h 45 min away. For a short trip, El Escorial is 50 minutes by train, but avoid Mondays.

El Escorial is the safest bet for a first trip, and El Escorial’s last admission time matters more than its opening time: the monastery stops letting people in 75 minutes before closing, at 5.45pm from April to September and 4.45pm from October to March. For the train timetables and stations, see day trips from Madrid by train.

Chinchón is closer than it looks on the map, but its theatre and clock tower only open on the Sunday 10am guided visit, which needs 20 people and does not run from June to September, as covered in what opens in Chinchón.

Should you do it as a day trip or stay the night?

Most of these villages fit in a day, because nine of the thirteen are under 1 h 30 min by car. Two reward an overnight stay. Sigüenza is the obvious one: the train takes 2 h 24 min or more each way, and the castle above the town is a parador. Valverde de los Arroyos, at the foot of the Ocejón peak, is built around a walk to the Despeñalagua falls, which takes a morning on its own. For two-day plans, see weekend trips from Madrid.

Monuments close for lunch, the Buitrago museum at 1.45pm on weekdays, and restaurants serve lunch from about 2pm. Plan the sights for the morning and eat late. Tap water is free in restaurants under Spanish law, tipping is optional, as explained in tipping in Madrid, and which Madrid transport ticket to buy covers the Cercanías and coach fares. Monday is the day to pick a village without a ticket desk, such as Patones, La Hiruela or Sepúlveda.

Walled and medieval villages worth the drive

Pedraza has one gate in its walls and a castle that belonged to the painter Ignacio Zuloaga. It opens Wednesday to Sunday, in winter from 4pm to 6pm in the afternoon, and the painter’s rooms in the keep are shown only on the first Friday of each month by booking on +34 921 509 825. No price is published; see the Pedraza day trip for the rest of the village.

Sigüenza cathedral costs €10 with the diocesan museum, €9 for over-65s and €7 for ages 12 to 18, and under-12s go free. It opens Monday to Friday 10.30am to 2pm and 4pm to 7.30pm, and weekends 10.30am to 7.30pm, with last entry at 1.30pm and 6.30pm. Inside are an Annunciation by El Greco and an Immaculate Conception by Zurbarán; the full day is in the Sigüenza day trip.

Consuegra, 1 h 40 min south in Toledo province, is the line of windmills next to a castle. The castle opens every day 10am to 1.30pm and 4pm to 6pm, according to the Consuegra town council, and closes on 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 and 6 January. Sepúlveda, also 1 h 40 min away, pairs a hilltop square with the Duratón gorge. Brihuega, 1 h 15 min out, is the place for lavender in July.

Slate villages in the mountains

These villages are built in dark slate in the Sierra Norte and the Guadalajara hills, and none has a ticket desk, so they suit any day.

Patones de Arriba is the closest, an hour away, but you cannot park in the village: where to park for Patones de Arriba explains the lower car park. La Hiruela is a hamlet you can walk round in an hour, 1 h 25 min out. Valverde de los Arroyos is the fullest example of black-slate architecture, 2 h 15 min away by car only, with the last stretch on a narrow road; its neighbours are in the black villages of Guadalajara.

Rascafría sits in the Lozoya valley with El Paular monastery, shut Monday and Tuesday, and the lakeside Finnish Forest. Manzanares el Real, 50 minutes away on coach 724, is the gateway to La Pedriza, though its castle has been closed since January 2025, with no reopening date announced.

Frequently asked questions about villages near Madrid

Can you visit villages near Madrid without a car?

Yes, five of them. San Lorenzo de El Escorial is about 50 minutes on the Cercanías C-8, Sigüenza has regional trains from Chamartín taking 2 h 24 min or more, and city coaches run to Chinchón (337 from Pavones), Buitrago (191) and Rascafría (194, about 135 minutes). Pedraza, Sepúlveda, Consuegra and Valverde need a car.

Which village near Madrid is best for a day trip by train?

Sigüenza, if you leave early. The morning trains from Chamartín depart between 6.43am and 8.38am, the cathedral and its museum cost €10, and the cathedral opens every day. For a shorter day, El Escorial is 50 minutes away on the C-8, but its monastery is shut on Mondays.

Are the villages near Madrid open on Mondays?

The streets are, but many monuments are not. Sigüenza cathedral and Consuegra castle open daily. El Escorial monastery and the Buitrago Picasso museum close on Mondays, Pedraza castle and El Paular open Wednesday to Sunday, and Chinchón’s interiors only open on a Sunday guided visit.

Is Pedraza worth visiting from Madrid?

Yes, if you have a car: it is 1 h 45 min away, fully walled with a single gate, and small enough to walk round in a couple of hours. There is no practical bus, its castle opens Wednesday to Sunday, and the castle does not publish a price, so you pay at the door.

How much does a village day trip from Madrid cost?

Walking around is free. El Escorial monastery is €14 and €7 reduced, Sigüenza cathedral with its museum €10, the Chinchón guided visit €5 and the Buitrago Picasso museum nothing. The bigger cost is getting there: the C-8 and the city coaches are cheap, while Pedraza, Sepúlveda, Consuegra and Valverde mean a hire car for the day.

Without a car, start with El Escorial or Chinchón; with one, Pedraza or Sigüenza make the most of a full day, and avoid Mondays.
