Pedraza Day Trip from Madrid, Castle, Lamb and Getting There

Is Pedraza worth a day trip from Madrid? Zuloaga's castle, a medieval jail and an arcaded Plaza Mayor fill one morning, and a wood-fired lamb lunch fills the afternoon. Three things to know first: only the castle opens on Monday, the bus allows no same-day return, and lamb for two works out from €27 each. The castle visit takes 40 minutes, with a free audio guide in English.

A Pedraza day trip from Madrid is a morning of sightseeing and a long lunch. The walled village in the province of Segovia has a single gate, and from it to the castle is just over 400 metres of cobbles. The castle costs €6 with a free English audio guide and takes 40 minutes; the old jail by the gate costs €4 and shuts on Mondays. It is 126 kilometres from Puerta del Sol, just under two hours by car, and no train goes there; the one bus, from Segovia, runs only on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Is Pedraza worth a day trip from Madrid? Yes, if you want a medieval village kept whole inside its walls and a roast lamb lunch on the same day. The €6 castle, the €4 jail and the Plaza Mayor fit in a morning, and lamb costs from €27 a head. You need a car, because the only bus has no same-day return, and you should avoid Monday.

Can you do Pedraza without a car?

Not in a day. Pedraza has a single bus line, run by Linecar between Segovia and Pedraza on Tuesdays and Fridays only. According to Pedraza town hall it leaves Segovia at 1pm and Pedraza at 9.30am. Arrive on it and your next way out is the following service day. The company’s number is +34 921 427 705, and the town hall advises confirming times, as they change.

That leaves three realistic options:

  1. Hire a car in Madrid and drive up the A-1.
  2. Take the train to Segovia, as described in the Segovia day trip from Madrid, and hire a car or book a taxi there for the 39 kilometres to Pedraza.
  3. Stay overnight in Pedraza and use the Tuesday or Friday bus.

If driving is out of the question, pick a destination with trains instead, from day trips from Madrid by train.

The drive and where to leave the car

The quick route runs about 89 kilometres on the A-1, then about 16 on the N-110, and into Pedraza on the SG-V-2512: 126 kilometres in all. Driving through Segovia on the AP-6 is only 3 kilometres longer but has a toll, so it only makes sense if you are stopping in Segovia.

Park outside the walls and walk in through the Puerta de la Villa, the only gate; the Ayuntamiento publishes no parking fees online. From the gate it is about 150 metres to the Plaza Mayor and just over 400 to the castle. On concert and festival days, the castle warns that parking capacity is limited.

Pedraza Castle, at Calle Mayor 22, is the reason most people come, and the company that runs it charges €6. The Basque painter Ignacio Zuloaga bought its ruins in 1925 and made it his studio and family home. Earlier, according to the Castilla y León regional government, the sons of King Francis I of France were held hostage there. The audio guide is free in English. Only summer hours are published, so outside summer phone +34 921 524 548 before you set off. Before a special date, check its website: it sometimes closes for events.

The Cárcel de la Villa is the village’s medieval prison, next to the gate. The regional government of Castilla y León lists it at €4, open Tuesday to Sunday from 11am to 2pm and 4pm to 7pm and closed on Mondays; the visit takes about 20 minutes. The Plaza Mayor, with its stone arcades, timber beams and the Romanesque tower of San Juan Bautista, is free and is where you will spend most of your time. The Imperial Eagle House, a regional nature centre in the ruins of San Miguel church, has a garden and costs €1. It opens from late March to early November, on Friday and Saturday from 10am to 2.30pm and 3.30pm to 7pm and on Sunday from 10am to 3pm; it is now closed until spring.

Which day to go

Go Wednesday to Sunday. Monday leaves only the castle; Tuesday adds the jail but usually not the guided walk. For the Imperial Eagle House, it has to be a weekend in season.

Two dates change everything. The Conciertos de las Velas fill the first two Saturdays of July, at 10pm on the castle esplanade, with the streets lit by candles: 6 and 13 July in 2024 and 4 and 11 July in 2026. On those nights, a concert ticket does not guarantee entry to the village. Then in early September comes the festival of the Virgen del Carrascal.

How ordering a roast lamb lunch works

Pedraza’s restaurants are asadores, roast houses with wood-fired ovens. Milk-fed lamb, cordero lechal, comes by the quarter for two people, so the price on the menu is for the table, not for you.

Suckling pig, cochinillo, is sold by the individual portion. A starter of judiones, big local butter beans, or a garlicky sopa castellana is the usual way to begin. Lunch in Spain starts around 2pm, tipping is optional, and you can ask for agua del grifo: Spanish law obliges restaurants to offer tap water free.

  • El Corral de Joaquina, Calle Íscar 3, just off the square. The 2026-27 menu that El Corral de Joaquina publishes lists the quarter of lamb for two at €59, a portion of suckling pig at €28 and judiones at €14. Eating alone? Its €34 set menu gives you a starter, suckling pig or another main, dessert, coffee and one drink. Bread is €1.50 extra. Book on +34 921 509 819.
  • El Jardín, Calle Calzada 6, has a garden terrace over the fields. Its menu has the quarter of lamb for two at €54, suckling pig at €25.50 and the Segovian sponge ponche segoviano at €9. Phone +34 921 509 862.
  • El Yantar de Pedraza, on the Plaza Mayor itself, seats 82 according to the regional tourism register but publishes no prices: ask when you book on +34 921 509 842.

Per person, the lamb works out at €27 at El Jardín and €29.50 at El Corral de Joaquina. For more Castilian dishes before or after the trip, see Madrid’s traditional dishes.

Where to stay, and what to pair it with

Stay the night if you want the village empty at dusk or plan to add Sepúlveda the next morning. The regional register lists the Hotel de la Villa at Calle Calzada 5, with 36 rooms, and Casa Taberna, a three-star rural hotel on the Plaza Mayor. Concert nights in July are the hardest to book.

Frequently asked questions about Pedraza

Can you visit Pedraza from Madrid without a car?

Not as a day trip. The only bus, run by Linecar, links Pedraza with Segovia on Tuesdays and Fridays, leaving Segovia at 1pm and Pedraza at 9.30am, so there is no same-day return. Hire a car in Madrid, or stay the night if you come by bus.

How long does it take to drive from Madrid to Pedraza?

Just under two hours for 126 kilometres from Puerta del Sol, mostly on the A-1 motorway, then the N-110 and the SG-V-2512. Going via Segovia on the AP-6 adds only 3 kilometres but includes a toll.

How much is Pedraza Castle?

€6 for adults and €5 reduced for pensioners, large families and people with a disability over 33 percent; under-5s go free. A free audio guide in English is included and the visit takes about 40 minutes.

Which day should I avoid in Pedraza?

Monday. The old jail is closed and the tourist office, which runs the guided walk, usually opens Wednesday to Sunday. In summer the castle opens every day, so on a Monday it is the only sight you can enter.

When is the candle concert in Pedraza?

The Conciertos de las Velas fall on the first two Saturdays of July at 10pm, on the castle esplanade, with the village lit by candles: 4 and 11 July in 2026. The castle warns that a concert ticket does not guarantee entry to the village on those nights.

Drive up early, see Pedraza before lunch and split the lamb.
