Eleven weekend trips fit within three hours’ drive of Madrid. Toledo is 1 h 4 min from Puerta del Sol, Segovia 1 h 15 min, Sigüenza 1 h 41 min, Cuenca 2 h 3 min and Salamanca 2 h 31 min, and all five have direct trains. The detail that shapes the whole weekend is the last train back on Sunday: 10.34pm from Cuenca, 9.58pm from Segovia, 9.37pm from Toledo and only 8.01pm from Salamanca. Two rules catch visitors out: the Monastery of Yuste and Peñafiel castle close on Mondays, and the Duratón gorge reserve needs a permit from 1 January to 31 July.
What is the best weekend trip from Madrid? Without a car, Toledo, Segovia or Cuenca, with trains of 25 minutes to just over an hour. For a slow village weekend, Pedraza or Sigüenza. For hiking, the Duratón gorge, Gredos or the Jerte Valley in spring. For wine, Aranda de Duero and Peñafiel. Albarracín, at about four hours, is too far.
Which weekend trip from Madrid suits you?

| Segovia | 1 h 15 min | From Chamartín, 25-28 min | Families, roast suckling pig |
| Sepúlveda and Duratón | 1 h 38 min | None | Canyon views, birdwatching |

| Pedraza | 1 h 44 min | None | Couples, July candlelit concerts |

| Salamanca | 2 h 31 min | 1 h 40 min fastest | A grand plaza at night |
The Jerte Valley and La Vera, at 2 h 39 min to 2 h 58 min, are the outlier: worth it in cherry-blossom season, hard without a car.
Can you do a weekend trip from Madrid without a car?
Five of the eleven trips work by train, and the Sunday evening is what to plan around.
Book the Saturday train out and the Sunday train back together on Renfe’s website or app: the Avant to Toledo and Segovia has a fixed fare of €13.90 each way, while AVLO and AVE fares to Cuenca move with demand and were from €9 when bought early. Trains to Sigüenza and Salamanca are fewer, so a missed Sunday train can mean an extra night.
Everything else on the list, from Pedraza to Gredos, is realistically a car trip. If you hire one in Madrid, check the rules in driving a rental car into Madrid’s low emission zone before you bring it back on Sunday.
Which old city is worth a night?
Toledo changes after dark, once the coach tours leave. The Avant leaves Atocha from 8.15am on Saturdays and takes 34 minutes. Spend Saturday on the cathedral and the old Jewish quarter, and walk the river path early on Sunday. Buy marzipan at Santo Tomé, making it since 1856, at Plaza de Zocodover 17; a box of the eel-shaped marzipan costs €25.30. More in Toledo or Segovia.
Segovia pairs a city with a village. The Alcázar opens every day from 10am to 6pm from November to March and to 7.30pm the rest of the year. Book dinner at Mesón de Cándido, by the Aqueduct at Plaza del Azoguejo 5, for its roast suckling pig: it serves 1pm to 4.30pm and 8pm to 11pm daily, on +34 921 425 911. Spend Sunday in Pedraza. Train details are in Segovia from Madrid.
Cuenca is the city weekend that suits children best. On Saturday, the Hanging Houses over the Huécar gorge; on Sunday, the Ciudad Encantada rock park, €5 for adults, €4 for ages 8 to 12 and free under 7, open 10am to 6pm in winter and sold only at the gate. The station is 6.4 km from the old town, as explained in Cuenca by train.
Salamanca is the city that most deserves the night: see the Plaza Mayor lit up on Saturday evening. The cathedrals cost €10, and with the university €20. The last Sunday train is early, at 8.01pm, so leave Sunday for one sight, not three. Walking routes are in Salamanca from Madrid.
Which village suits a slow weekend?
Pedraza is a walled village with a single gate, cobbled streets and a castle, small enough to see in a morning, so pair it with Segovia or Sepúlveda. Its big date is the Candlelit Concerts on the first two Saturdays of July, when the whole village is lit only by candles; in 2026 they fell on 4 and 11 July at 10pm. Tickets go fast and access to the village is controlled on those nights.
Sigüenza is the weekend for silence and a long dinner. It is 1 h 41 min by car or 2 h 24 min to 3 h 13 min by train from Chamartín, because works have closed the line between Guadalajara and Torralba and Renfe runs that stretch by road, with Sunday trains back at 8.12pm and 8.46pm. The cathedral holds the tomb of the Doncel, a reading knight carved in alabaster, and the Parador sits inside the castle above the town.
Where to go hiking for a weekend from Madrid?
The Duratón gorge near Sepúlveda is the closest canyon to Madrid, at 1 h 38 min. A track of about 4 km from Villaseca leads to the car park for the twelfth-century San Frutos hermitage on the cliff edge. To walk the reserve zone between 1 January and 31 July you need a permit from the park visitor centre at Calle Conde de Sepúlveda 34, on +34 921 540 322.
Valverde de los Arroyos is the best known of Guadalajara’s black-slate villages, 2 h 14 min away at 1,255 m. A 4 km path with 110 m of climbing, about 1 h 40 min, reaches the Despeñalagua waterfall, roughly 120 m high. It suits children who already walk well, but not pushchairs.
The Sierra de Gredos is the mountain weekend, based in Hoyos del Espino, 2 h 22 min away. Trail PR-AV 17 runs 6.4 km from the Plataforma to the Laguna Grande, with 390 m of climbing and about 2 h 30 min of walking, rated medium-high. No public transport reaches the Plataforma.
The Jerte Valley and La Vera are for spring blossom and summer river pools. The Monastery of Yuste, where Emperor Charles V retired, costs €8, or €5 reduced, according to Patrimonio Nacional. It opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 6pm in winter and to 7pm from April to September, and it is free for EU citizens on Wednesday and Sunday from 3pm. The only Saturday train to Plasencia leaves at 10.55am, and the last one back on Sunday at 4.55pm.
What is a wine weekend in the Ribera del Duero like?
Aranda de Duero, 1 h 57 min away, sits on a network of medieval wine cellars dug under its streets, visited with a guide by booking at the tourist office. Lunch is roast milk-fed lamb from a wood oven. On Sunday drive on to Peñafiel, 2 h 19 min from Madrid, where the castle houses the Provincial Wine Museum for €6, open Tuesday to Sunday 11.30am to 2pm and 4pm to 7pm in winter. Spanish lunch runs from about 2pm, so book the asador for Saturday; tap water is free on request and tipping is optional, as explained in tipping in Madrid.
When is the best time for each trip?
- Spring: the Jerte for cherry blossom; Gredos once the snow clears from the trail.
- July: Pedraza’s candlelit concerts; the Duratón permit still applies until the 31st.
- August and September: the Duratón opens to walkers without a permit; La Vera’s river pools.
- Autumn: San Frutos pilgrimage on 25 October; the Ribera after the harvest.
- Winter: the train cities, which do not depend on mountain roads.

The nearest trip, Toledo, is 75 km from Puerta del Sol and the furthest, the Jerte Valley, 220 km. Segovia is reached on the AP-6 motorway, and Pedraza, Sepúlveda and Aranda de Duero on the A-1.
