Christmas Concerts in Madrid, Free and Ticketed

Christmas concerts in Madrid are mostly free. In the 2025-26 season the city's programme sent gospel, flamenco and jazz to squares, palace gardens and two historic balconies in the run-up to Christmas, and to churches until just before Three Kings; Handel's Messiah at the Auditorio Nacional was the ticketed alternative, from 42 euros.

Where can you hear Christmas music in Madrid? Madrid City Council programmes free Christmas concerts each year: in 2025-26, from 18 to 30 December in the Sabatini Gardens, Plaza de los Carros and two historic balconies, and from 18 December to 3 January in three churches. The Auditorio Nacional sold Handel’s Messiah from 42 to 78 euros.

What Spanish Christmas music sounds like

If you know carols from Britain or America, the Spanish repertoire is different. The traditional song is the villancico, and one of the best-known in Madrid is the Marimorena, a popular verse once sung to ask for the Christmas aguinaldo, a small gift of money or sweets.

The city’s December mix in 2025 was gospel, flamenco, soul, jazz and early music, plus a zambomba, the Andalusian Christmas gathering built around a friction drum and clapping. Flamenco singers such as Arcángel and Esperanza Fernández sang Christmas songs in churches, and the vocal group La Grande Chapelle performed seventeenth-century carols from the Spanish royal chapel.

Most venues sit between the Royal Palace and Cibeles, so the concerts slot into an evening on the Christmas lights walking route or a visit to the nativity scenes. The Auditorio Nacional is further north, in Chamartín. Opening hours over the holidays are in what’s open in Madrid on Christmas Day, and the rest of the season in Christmas in Madrid.

Before you go

The 2026-27 programme is published in late November on the city’s Christmas website. In the crowded squares keep your phone and wallet in a front pocket, and a single ticket on the Metro costs €1.50 to €2.00.

In 2025 the free concerts started between noon and 8pm, and dinner starts late in Madrid, so an evening concert fits before it. Church and auditorium concerts are first come, first seated where there is no ticket, so arrive early. Street concerts are outdoors in December, and the evenings are cold; dress for standing still. For a late show afterwards, flamenco venues and prices are in flamenco in Madrid.

Hear the free programme in the street, and book only for the Messiah or the Real.
