Christmas in Madrid for Couples, an Evening Plan

Christmas in Madrid for couples comes down to one well-timed evening. Watch the sun set from the Cibeles tower before it closes, see the lights come on at 6pm and walk down to Plaza Mayor, for 8 euros for two, the price of the deck. Skip Mondays and the big holiday nights, when the tower stays shut and the lights bus does not run.

For a couple, Christmas in Madrid is best done as one evening with three fixed times. In December the sun sets around 5.50pm, the Christmas lights come on at 6pm, and the viewing deck in the Cibeles tower takes its last visitors at 7pm. Fit those together and the best of the season costs very little: the walk, the market and the sunset from the Temple of Debod are free, and the priciest stop is 12 euros for two on the Círculo de Bellas Artes rooftop.

What is a good Christmas evening for couples in Madrid? Watch the sunset, around 5.50pm in December, from the Cibeles viewing deck, which costs 4 euros and takes its last visitors at 7pm. See the lights come on at 6pm, then walk 2.2 km down Gran Vía to Plaza Mayor. The deck is shut on Mondays and on 24, 25 and 31 December.

Sunset from the Cibeles deck, then the lights coming on at 6pm: the two fit in the same hour from late November to early January.

Plan backwards from the sunset, and the rest falls into place.

  1. 5pm, up the Cibeles tower. The Mirador Madrid deck opens 4pm to 7.30pm Tuesday to Sunday, with entries every 30 minutes; tickets are 4 euros, plus 50 cents online. Details in the Cibeles viewing deck.
  2. 5.50pm, the sunset. On 1 December the sun sets at 5.49pm, on the 21st at 5.51pm and on New Year’s Eve at 5.57pm.
  3. 6pm, the lights come on. In the 2025-26 season they stayed on until midnight Sunday to Thursday and until 1am on Fridays and Saturdays. The walk is in the Christmas lights route.
  4. 7pm, the market. Plaza Mayor’s 104 stalls stayed open until 9pm, and 10pm on Fridays, Saturdays and holiday eves, in 2025-26: see the Plaza Mayor Christmas market.
  5. Later, a hot chocolate or a rooftop. Chocolatería San Ginés, in the passage at number 5 since 1894, stays open into the night Thursday to Saturday; the rooftop runs until 1.30am, or 2am at weekends.

Where to watch the sunset, free or from a tower

The Temple of Debod, at Calle de Ferraz 1, is an open esplanade facing west over Casa de Campo, free and with no booking; only the temple interior is ticketed. The Cibeles deck is the paid option in the centre that is still open at sunset in December. The other viewpoints are compared in the best viewpoints in Madrid.

Is the Christmas lights bus worth it for two?

The Naviluz, an open-top bus, leaves from Calle de Felipe IV, by the Ritz, every hour from 6pm to 10pm and takes about 50 minutes. In 2025-26 an adult paid 12 to 15 euros, or 9 euros on the 9pm and 10pm departures, so 18 euros for two late in the evening. It did not run on 24 or 31 December or on 5 January. Whether it is worth it is in the Naviluz bus.

What time is dinner, and what to watch out for

Dinner in Madrid starts late, rarely before 9pm, which is why the sunset-and-lights plan fits before it.

For Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve, book a set menu early: prices and dates are in Christmas dinner in Madrid. Keep your phone and wallet zipped away on the crowded Friday and Saturday walks through Sol, and dress for cold: December nights in Madrid average a low of about 3.6 degrees. The rest of the season is in Christmas in Madrid.

To book the meal itself, Madrid’s romantic restaurants lists what each costs for two.
