Sepúlveda is a walled hilltop town in Segovia province, 126.5 km north of Madrid’s Puerta del Sol, about 1 hour 40 minutes up the A-1. It is also the base for visiting the Hoces del Río Duratón Natural Park, a limestone canyon where griffon vultures nest. The best-known view of the gorge is from San Frutos hermitage, 16.6 km west of town and 925 m on foot from its car park.
To go on your own you need a car, or else book an organised tour. There is no direct bus line with a published timetable from Madrid, and the hermitage sits at the end of a dirt track. The park visitor centre is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday and costs €1.
Is Sepúlveda worth a day trip from Madrid? Yes, if you have a car and want a medieval town and a canyon with vultures in one day. Drive 1 hour 40 minutes up the A-1, see the town in the morning, then walk 925 m to San Frutos hermitage, no permit needed. Skip Tuesday and Wednesday, when the visitor centre is closed.
What does a day in Sepúlveda look like?
Plan on about ten hours door to door: 1 hour 40 minutes each way on the A-1, a morning in town, the San Frutos walk at midday and a late Spanish lunch. Here is the order that fits the opening hours.
- Leave Madrid by 8.30am. With 1 hour 40 minutes of driving you arrive just after the visitor centre opens at 10am.
- See the town first. The Casa del Parque, inside the old church of Santiago at Calle del Conde de Sepúlveda 34, explains the canyon with a model and a vulture room for €1. Then walk up to the Romanesque church of El Salvador and down to Nuestra Señora de la Peña, which overlooks the gorge.
- Drive to San Frutos around midday. It is 16.6 km via Villaseca; the last stretch is a dirt track.
- Walk to the hermitage. 925 m each way, about 80 m of climb, an hour with stops.
- Lunch from 2pm. Lunch is the main meal in Spain and roast lamb is the local dish; book ahead at weekends.
- Head back, or add Pedraza. It is 24.9 km away, about 37 minutes by car.
If you would rather go by public transport, a day trip to Segovia works by train. For other options, see day trips from Madrid.
When can you walk, and when do you need a permit?
The park follows the vulture breeding calendar. From 1 January to 31 July, individuals need a permit from the Casa del Parque, on +34 921 54 03 22, to walk the reserve-zone trails. From 1 August to 31 December they do not. Boats follow a similar rule, according to the Confederación Hidrográfica del Duero, which manages the river.
The rest of the park rules apply all year: stay on marked paths, no climbing, camping or fires, and drones need authorisation. Keep dogs under control. There is no mobile coverage at the bottom of the canyon, so tell someone your route.
How do you walk to San Frutos hermitage?
Park at the San Frutos car park, past Villaseca. The path is 925 m each way with about 80 m of climb, and according to Patrimonio Natural de Castilla y León, which runs the park facilities, it is easy and open all year. In summer it advises going in the cooler hours and carrying water.
The hermitage is what remains of the priory of San Frutos, with a Visigothic necropolis beside the apse. You cross onto it by an 18th-century stone bridge over a crack in the rock known as la Cuchillada. From there you look down on the tightest meanders of the river and the cliffs where griffon vultures, Egyptian vultures and red-billed choughs nest.
Which other trails are worth it?
- Talcano bridge to Villaseca bridge. The long walk along the river: 10 km each way, almost flat, about 3 hours in each direction, and also open to bikes. Near Villaseca bridge you can look through a gate into the Cave of the Seven Altars, a Visigothic rock church. It runs through the reserve zone, so from January to July bring a permit.
- Dos Ríos trail. 5 km from the visitor centre to La Peña, past the town gates and Talcano bridge.
- La Glorieta. 800 m each way from beside the town care home, wheelchair accessible, at its best in autumn colour.
- La Vega. 4.5 km each way along the river from Burgomillodo bridge, outside the park and without restrictions.

Can you canoe the Duratón gorge?
Yes, with the right company. The guided canoe trip is run by Hoces del Duratón SL, licence TA-40-08, based at Sebúlcor, 19.8 km from Sepúlveda.

Where do you eat in Sepúlveda?
Lunch is the main meal here, and the local dish is lamb roasted in a wood oven. Figón Zute el Mayor, known as Tinín, at Calle Lope Tablada de Diego 6, has been open since 1850 and serves only lamb, with bread, salad and puddings such as ponche segoviano. Book on +34 921 540 165. Ask the price when you book.
If you are at San Frutos at the weekend, Asador El Alcaudón in Villaseca, at Calle Iglesia 10, saves the drive back; it opens at weekends, in Easter week and on long weekends. Tipping is not expected in Spain; rounding up is enough, and restaurants must offer free tap water if you ask. To know the dishes before you go, see Madrid’s traditional dishes.
Can you combine Sepúlveda with Pedraza?
Yes. Pedraza, the walled village with Zuloaga’s castle, is 24.9 km away, about 37 minutes by car, and works as a late-afternoon stop; see Pedraza as a day trip. Riaza, 31.6 km east, is the turn-off for the Ayllón mountains. With three stops the day gets tight, so for a relaxed trip sleep in Sepúlveda and see Pedraza the next morning.
